How I Beat Liver Disease and Lost 59kg: A Dad's Miracle
In mid-2023, I was unhealthy. I was way overweight and constantly going to the doctor for this issue, that issue. As a busy executive, finding time for myself felt impossible. Then everything changed.
The Wake-Up Call
I was diagnosed with cirrhosis due to fatty liver. I was given an estimate of about 7 years until I would likely need a transplant.
I was told there was no reversal once my liver had gotten to the stage it was.
I was told that with my BMI there was almost no chance I could lose the weight I needed to lose on my own to stop the progression of the cirrhosis.
Told I needed bariatric surgery.
I knew I had never taken weight loss seriously and didn't want to take that drastic of a measure unless I knew I had truly tried.
I needed to be here for me, for my little 9-year-old girl. I wanted to never say no when she wanted to do something with me.
The First Steps
I started small: meal prepping, cutting snacks, and saying no to mindless eating.
But that wasn't enough.
Then I read a book, Younger Next Year, that said I needed to also work out, and basically do it every day.
I needed to move daily, but as a time-crunched dad, the gym felt impossible. And I couldn't form a consistent fitness regimen.
Home workouts with traditional machines left me frustrated and clueless. I didn't know how to do them. I didn't know if I was doing the workouts right.
Found Speediance in December 2023
I discovered Speediance, a compact smart home gym system with professional-grade workouts. Skeptical but hopeful, I gave it a shot.
- Began weight training 4 days a week and cardio (rowing and skiing) 3 days a week
- Video workout routines helped me know what to do and how to do it
- Became easy to set a routine
- Became fun
- Built a habit where not working out feels strange
The Transformation
The results shocked everyone, including my medical team:
- Doctor said I needed to lose 10% to make a difference. I lost 27%
- Lost 59kg and still going
- Dropped 10 BMI points
- 40kg last year
- This quarter gained 3.6kg in lean body mass, or 2.2%
- This quarter, despite the holidays, I gained almost 1.4kg of muscle mass
- And lost 3kg of fat mass
- My blood pressure is down to normal levels
- More energy to be with my daughter
- I can now say yes!
But the ultimate victory?
The latest biopsy showed no signs of liver disease! I reversed my cirrhosis!
What I love about Speediance
- Doesn't take up space
- Many workout options
- I can do strength training with arms, legs, torso, and back. But I can also get cardio with the rower
- The machine itself may look lean, but it's mighty. Very sturdy, even for big guys like me
- The machine took away the intimidation of working out
- Video workouts, routines, and demonstrations help me understand how to do the movements and what not to do
- I have some degenerative back issues that restrict some movements that I can do, but there are so many alternate options for me so I can still get my workout
- I can create my own workouts around my back issues
- The Speediance team is constantly updating the system with new workouts
- The Speediance team gives workout challenges and gifts to keep you engaged and make working out fun
- Free workout content!
- The online social media group is a great place to meet others, like-minded people, and get support and encouragement
A Message to Other Dads (and Anyone Struggling)
I literally tell people that Speediance saved my life, because it did. I feel it did, and my doctor tells me it did! I've also decided to add more cardio to my routine by buying a VeloNix. I'm only a couple weeks in but I've already seen it make a difference for me. A year later, I'm still grinding. Speediance hasn't quit on me, and I haven't quit on it.
This isn't a "before and after" story, it's a "before and now" journey. And it's one I'll keep living, one rep at a time. If I can do it, so can you. Your miracle is waiting.
